PowerPoint Timer Not Working? Fix Common Timer Problems
If your PowerPoint timer is not working, the right fix depends on how the timer was created. A timer built with PowerPoint animations can fail for different reasons from a timer created with an add-in such as UbiTimer.
Use the checks below if your countdown does not start, the timer is not showing, it resets when you change slides, Auto-Start does not trigger, or UbiTimer is not behaving as expected.
First: What Kind of PowerPoint Timer Is Not Working?
Start by identifying how your timer was created. This avoids troubleshooting settings that do not apply to your timer.
Timer Built with PowerPoint Animations
If you created the countdown manually using animations, shapes, number sequences or slide timings, start with the animation troubleshooting section below.
UbiTimer Add-In
If the timer was created through the UbiTimer task pane, skip to the UbiTimer troubleshooting section for checks covering timer creation, Slide Show, Global Timer, Auto-Start and licensing.
UbiTimer Not Working? Try These Checks First
If you are using UbiTimer, these are the first things I would check before changing PowerPoint animation settings.
1 Confirm the UbiTimer Task Pane Opens
Open PowerPoint and launch UbiTimer. If the task pane itself does not open, the problem is with the add-in environment rather than the timer on an individual slide.
Try:- Close and reopen PowerPoint.
- Open the presentation again.
- Launch UbiTimer from your PowerPoint add-ins.
2 Create a Simple Test Timer
Before troubleshooting a complex presentation, create a simple countdown on a new or blank slide.
Why this helps:If the test timer works, the issue may be specific to the presentation, slide or timer configuration rather than UbiTimer generally.
3 Test the Timer in Slide Show
Some timing behaviour is easiest to verify while actually presenting. Start Slide Show and test the timer from the slide where you expect it to run.
4 Check Whether the Timer Is Hidden Behind Slide Content
If the timer appears to be missing, check its position and whether another shape, image or text box is covering it.
Try:Move the timer to a clear area of the slide and test again.
5 Check the Timer Duration
Confirm that the duration is what you intended and that the timer has not been configured with a very short or zero-length duration.
6 Validate Your Licence if a Paid Feature Is Unavailable
If an advanced feature should be available under your licence but is not being recognised, open the UbiTimer Account area and use Validate Licence.
This refreshes the licence associated with the current UbiTimer installation.
PowerPoint Timer Not Showing on the Slide
If the timer appears to have been created but you cannot see it, check the slide before assuming the timer has stopped working.
Check Layering
Another shape or image may be covering the timer. Move the timer or bring it forward in the slide's object order.
Check Position
Make sure the timer has not been positioned outside the visible slide area or too close to an edge.
Check Contrast
A timer can appear missing if its text or visual styling is too similar to the slide background.
Timer Stops or Resets When You Change Slides
A per-slide timer and a presentation-wide timer are different workflows. If you need one countdown to continue while the presentation advances, use UbiTimer's Global Timer workflow.

PowerPoint Timer Does Not Start Automatically
There are two different situations to consider.
Manual PowerPoint Animation Timer
If your countdown was built with native PowerPoint animations, check the animation trigger in the Animation Pane.
An animation configured as On Click will wait for a click rather than starting automatically.
UbiTimer Auto-Start
If you are using UbiTimer Auto-Start, confirm that the Auto-Start mode and relevant slide settings are configured as intended.

Timer Not Appearing Where You Expect in Presenter View
First decide whether the timer is meant to be visible to the audience or only to the presenter. These are different presentation setups.
UbiTimer's Presenter-Only workflow is intended for situations where the presenter needs private timing rather than a timer displayed on the audience slide.

Countdown to Time Shows an Unexpected Duration
Countdown to Time uses a target clock time rather than a fixed duration. For example, if the target is 10:00 AM, the remaining countdown depends on the current time when the timer is used.
If the selected target time has already passed, check the configured time and set the intended future target.

A Timer Group Is Not Running on the Expected Slides
Timer Groups use defined slide ranges. If a group does not appear where expected, confirm its start and end slides and make sure the current slide belongs to that range.
Only the timer group associated with the relevant slide range should be expected to run there.

Check PowerPoint and Your Microsoft 365 Environment
If UbiTimer worked previously but now behaves differently, the issue may be related to PowerPoint itself, your Microsoft 365 environment or organisation settings.
Restart PowerPoint
Save your presentation, close PowerPoint completely and reopen it before testing again.
Check for Office Updates
If your PowerPoint installation is significantly behind on updates, install available Microsoft Office updates and test the presentation again.
Test Another Presentation
Create a blank PowerPoint file and add a simple UbiTimer countdown. This helps distinguish a presentation-specific problem from a wider add-in issue.
Consider Organisation Settings
Schools and organisations may apply Microsoft 365 policies that affect Office add-ins. If UbiTimer cannot be opened at all, your IT administrator may need to review the environment.
UbiTimer is designed for supported Microsoft PowerPoint environments on Windows and Mac. Exact behaviour can depend on PowerPoint, Microsoft 365 and organisation settings.
If Your Timer Was Built with PowerPoint Animations
The following checks apply mainly to timers created manually using PowerPoint's own animations rather than UbiTimer.
